The <strong>Official College of Doctors and Graduates in Philosophy and Letters and in Science of Catalonia (CDL)<\/strong> and <strong>Logos Media<\/strong> organised the workshop <em>\u201cRestorative Practices: Learning by Doing Circles (Restorative Circles)\u201d<\/em>, led by internationally renowned expert <strong>Jean Schmitz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A global reference in restorative justice and restorative practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of Belgian nationality and living in South America (mainly in Peru) since the 1980s, <strong>Jean Schmitz<\/strong> holds a Master\u2019s degree in Political Science and in Restorative Practices from the <strong>International Institute of Restorative Practices (IIRP)<\/strong>. With over two decades of experience in social and educational programmes working with at-risk adolescents and families, he is one of the main promoters of <strong>juvenile restorative justice in Peru<\/strong> and a global reference in the development of <strong>restorative circles<\/strong> and <strong>community dialogue processes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>His work has been internationally recognised: in 2010 he received the <strong>Veillard Cybuslki Award<\/strong> from the International Association of Family and Youth Judges and Magistrates, in recognition of his contribution to promoting restorative justice in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning by doing circles: a transformative and experiential methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The workshop offered a practical and participatory approach to <strong>restorative practices<\/strong>, with the goal of training us to <strong>prepare and facilitate dialogue circles<\/strong> in different contexts \u2014 educational, workplace, community, penitentiary, and family.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practise the preparation and facilitation of <strong>sequential circles, non-sequential circles, and the fishbowl technique<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Learn to <strong>respond to unexpected situations<\/strong> during facilitation.<\/li>\n<li>Design circles focused on the <strong>prevention of bullying and cyberbullying<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Integrate the <strong>responsible use of artificial intelligence<\/strong> in the preparation of circles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was one of those formative experiences that truly leave a mark. Beyond the theoretical content, the workshop allowed us to <strong>experience the essence of restorative practices first-hand<\/strong>, creating an <strong>authentic space of trust, listening, and community<\/strong>. The way Jean shares his experience and passion for the restorative field is both inspiring and contagious, inviting us to deepen this profoundly human perspective on conflict.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most symbolic elements of the workshop was the presence of <strong>Ren\u00e9<\/strong>, the small <strong>green puppet<\/strong> that accompanies Jean Schmitz in his trainings and is passed from hand to hand to indicate the <strong>turn to speak<\/strong> within the circle. This simple yet meaningful object reminds us of the importance of <strong>respecting each person\u2019s time, voice, and presence<\/strong> \u2014 essential pillars of all restorative practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The power of collective work and the value of Logos Media and CDL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through this initiative, <strong>Logos Media<\/strong> and the <strong>Official College of Doctors and Graduates (CDL)<\/strong> reaffirmed their commitment to <strong>training in mediation and restorative practices<\/strong> as essential pathways toward coexistence and constructive conflict resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop brought together professionals from mediation, education, law, social services, law enforcement, and the penitentiary field. Together, we shared <strong>experiences, tools, and insights<\/strong> on how to apply restorative practices in our professional and community settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking to the future: towards family restorative circles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the proposals that emerged during the workshop, <strong>Anna Vall Rius<\/strong> suggested the possibility of offering a <strong>specialised training on family restorative circles<\/strong>, a direction that would allow us to deepen the application of these practices in the fields of <strong>family mediation<\/strong> and <strong>restorative justice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, <strong>Jean Schmitz\u2019s<\/strong> visit to Barcelona was an <strong>opportunity for learning, inspiration, and professional connection<\/strong> for all of us who work to build a culture of peace, respect, and shared responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>As a conflict mediator, I am left with the importance of <strong>listening with respect<\/strong>, <strong>creating safe spaces for dialogue<\/strong>, and <strong>facilitating trust and repair<\/strong> as paths towards healthy coexistence.
