The Centre de Mediació de Catalunya (CMC) is the public body responsible for promoting, coordinating, and advancing mediation in Catalonia. Created to foster a culture of dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, the CMC has become a key institution within the Catalan justice system.
What does it do?
The main functions of the CMC include:
- Promoting the use of mediation as an alternative to judicial proceedings

- Supporting training, outreach, and awareness actions on mediation
- Ensuring the quality and proper functioning of mediation services
- Collaborating with courts, professional associations and institutions to promote Appropriate Dispute Resolution Methods (ADRMs)
How does it work?
The CMC acts as a technical and institutional reference for all stakeholders: professionals, courts, citizens, administration, and specialized organizations.
It coordinates services such as:
- Family Mediation Service, for separation, divorce, and intergenerational issues
- Community and Neighbourhood Mediation Service, in partnership with local councils
- Pilot programmes in criminal, school, administrative or healthcare mediation, among others
It also validates training programs and accredits qualified mediators.
Who oversees it?
The CMC is part of the Department of Justice, Rights and Memory of the Government of Catalonia, and it is governed by Law 15/2009 on mediation in private law matters, as well as other relevant regulations.
Where is it located?
The CMC headquarters is in Barcelona, at the Department of Justice building on Pau Claris Street, number 81. It also works with a network of mediation points throughout Catalonia.
A committed leadership
Until just a few days ago, the Centre was brilliantly led by Ms. Elisabeth Saltor i Padró, a key figure in Catalan mediation. Her leadership has been crucial in strengthening the CMC as a driver of innovation, upholding high professional standards, and promoting mediation as a useful and transformative tool.
We express our deep appreciation for her exemplary leadership and dedicated service.
